Ruta 40 – Argentina

Argentina’s longest and most legendary road, Ruta 40 parallels the Andes through deserts, vineyards, mountains, and Patagonian steppes. Highlights include Salta, Mendoza, Bariloche, and the Fitz Roy range near El Chaltén.

The Route:

Distance: ~5,000+ km

Duration: 2–4 weeks (or select sections)

Salta

A colonial gem in northwest Argentina, surrounded by red rock canyons and vineyards. Explore historic architecture, sample empanadas, and head out on scenic drives to Cafayate or the Calchaquí Valleys.

Mendoza

Argentina’s wine capital lies in the shadow of the Andes. Sip world-famous Malbecs, tour lush vineyards, and dine in the sunshine. It’s also a launchpad for hiking or climbing Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Bariloche

Nestled in the Lake District, Bariloche offers alpine scenery, chocolate shops, and lakeside charm. Go hiking, kayaking, or drive the Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) for postcard-perfect views.

El Chaltén

Argentina’s trekking capital, El Chaltén is home to dramatic spires like Fitz Roy. Day hikes lead to glaciers, lakes, and unbeatable mountain panoramas. A must for outdoor lovers and photographers.

El Calafate & Perito Moreno Glacier

Visit the towering Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the world’s few advancing glaciers. Walk along its viewing platforms or take a boat up close to the ice. El Calafate is the lively gateway town.
