Carretera Austral – Chile

One of the wildest and most beautiful road trips on Earth, the Carretera Austral winds through Patagonia’s glaciers, fjords, turquoise rivers, and remote villages. Expect gravel roads, ferry crossings, and a true off-grid experience.

The Route:

Distance: ~1,240 km

Duration: 10–14 days

Pumalín Park

A vast nature reserve of temperate rainforest, waterfalls, and volcanoes. Hike through ancient forests, spot wildlife, and enjoy pristine campsites. This park, founded by conservationist Douglas Tompkins, sets the tone for the wild beauty of the Carretera Austral.

Futaleufú

A small mountain town known for world-class whitewater rafting on the Futaleufú River. Surrounded by peaks and glacial lakes, it’s also a hub for hiking, fly-fishing, and adventure sports — a Patagonia thrill-seeker’s dream.

Coyhaique

The unofficial capital of Chilean Patagonia, Coyhaique offers comfort, craft beer, and mountain views. A great base to refuel and rest, it also provides access to nearby hiking, fly-fishing, and scenic roads.

Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol)

Otherworldly, water-sculpted marble formations on Lake General Carrera. Accessible by boat or kayak, their swirling colors and textures are one of the most surreal sights in Patagonia — a must-see highlight of the route.

Villa O’Higgins

The final outpost on the Carretera Austral, Villa O’Higgins is remote, quiet, and breathtaking. Surrounded by glaciers and fjords, it's perfect for trekking and boat excursions — or just pausing in Patagonia’s true wilderness.
