The Route
Distance: ~470 km
Duration: 2–4 days (longer with acclimatization stops)
Manali
A lively Himalayan town surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped peaks. Known for its adventure sports and vibrant bazaar, Manali is a popular gateway into the mountains, where apple orchards, ancient temples, and cozy cafés set the tone for the journey ahead.
Rohtang Pass
At nearly 4,000 meters, Rohtang offers dramatic views of the Pir Panjal Range. Often cloaked in snow, this pass bridges green Kullu Valley with the stark beauty of Lahaul, signaling the real beginning of the high-altitude adventure to Leh.
Keylong
A tranquil valley town flanked by craggy peaks and home to ancient Buddhist monasteries. It’s an ideal place to rest and acclimate, with traditional architecture, friendly locals, and stunning trails that open into the arid landscape beyond.
Pang
The highest army transit camp in the world, Pang sits at 4,600 meters. Surrounded by stark, wind-carved mountains and the wide-open More Plains, it offers an eerie, otherworldly experience in the high desert of Ladakh.
Leh
A bustling high-altitude town that blends Tibetan Buddhist culture with vibrant markets and ancient monasteries. It’s the crown jewel of the route — the base for visiting places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake, or simply relaxing after the journey.
