The Pamir Highway (Tajikistan/Kyrgyzstan)

One of the world’s highest and most remote highways, the Pamir Highway crosses stark mountain deserts, turquoise lakes, and high plateaus. You’ll pass through Wakhan Valley, meeting nomads and experiencing truly off-the-grid travel.

The Route

Distance: ~1,200 km

Duration: 7–12 days

Osh

Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest city and a historic Silk Road hub. Climb Sulaiman-Too Mountain, explore vibrant bazaars, and enjoy Central Asian hospitality before heading into the Pamir’s high-altitude wilderness.

Karakul Lake

A hauntingly beautiful crater lake at nearly 4,000 meters, Karakul shimmers with surreal blue tones surrounded by stark, snow-covered peaks. Its silence and remoteness leave a lasting impression.

Murghab

The highest town in the former Soviet Union, Murghab is a windswept settlement surrounded by mountains. A key resupply point, it’s also a window into local Kyrgyz-Tajik culture and nomadic life.

Wakhan Valley

A breathtaking stretch where the Pamirs meet the Hindu Kush. With ancient forts, friendly homestays, and views into Afghanistan, the Wakhan Valley is both remote and culturally rich.

Dushanbe

Tajikistan’s leafy capital offers boulevards, Soviet-era relics, and museums. After the remote Pamir leg, it’s a welcome return to comfort and a place to relax, reflect, and explore Central Asian city life.
